Reflection
Romans 2 opens with an important reminder that it’s easier to recognize the faults of others rather than acknowledge our own. The Apostle Paul is not telling us to ignore sin or abandon discernment. His warning is against a self-righteous spirit that sees the sins of others while overlooking its own.
Before focusing on someone else’s shortcomings, perhaps we should allow the Holy Spirit to search our own hearts and reveal the areas where we need to grow and change. Humility begins when we recognize that we, too, stand in need of God’s grace and mercy every day.
As we begin this week, let’s ask ourselves: Am I quicker to examine others than I am to examine myself? Do I respond to the faults of others with humility, grace, and truth? What might God be showing me about my own heart? As we honestly answer these questions before the Lord, He will continue the work of making us more like Jesus.
Prayer
Merciful God, in the name of Jesus, thank You for Your grace and mercy toward us each and everyday. Help us to examine our own hearts before judging the actions of others. Remove pride and self-righteousness from us. Reveal those actions, attitudes, thoughts, and habits present in our lives that do not glorify You. Give us humble hearts that are willing to receive Your correction and the courage to grow and change where You reveal our need. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
