The Vineyard Still Belongs to God

A 7-Week Devotional Journey through Luke 20:9–18

Week 7 — The Rejected Stone Became the Cornerstone

Scripture Focus: Luke 20:16-18

“He will come and destroy those vinedressers and give the vineyard to others. And when they heard it they said, “Certainly not!” Then He looked at them and said, “What then is this that is written: ‘The stone which the builders rejected Has become the chief cornerstone’?Whoever falls on that stone will be broken; but on whomever it falls, it will grind him to powder.”

Lesson for The Week:
The builders rejected the stone, but God made Him the cornerstone.

Jesus is the foundation of salvation, faith, ministry, truth, and eternal life. We either humble ourselves before Him in repentance, or we face Him in judgment.

This final week brings the series to a strong close: Christ must not be added onto our lives; He must be the foundation of our lives.

Reflection Question:
Am I building my life on Christ, or merely adding His name to what I already want to build?

Prayer:
Merciful God, in the name of Jesus, let Jesus Christ be the cornerstone of my life. Tear down anything I have built without Him. Establish me on truth, obedience, humility, and faith. Amen.

Series Closing Thought

  • Everything in our lives belongs to God.
  • He calls us to live in a way that bears fruit for His Kingdom.
  • When God sends truth, correction, or guidance, we should receive it with humility.
  • Jesus is God the Son, our Lord, Savior, and rightful Heir over all things.
  • He is the foundation on which our lives must be built.

Luke 20:9–18

The Parable of the Wicked Vinedressers

Then He began to tell the people this parable: “A certain man planted a vineyard, leased it to vinedressers, and went into a far country for a long time. 10 Now at vintage-time he sent a servant to the vinedressers, that they might give him some of the fruit of the vineyard. But the vinedressers beat him and sent him away empty-handed. 11 Again he sent another servant; and they beat him also, treated him shamefully, and sent him away empty-handed. 12 And again he sent a third; and they wounded him also and cast him out.

13 “Then the owner of the vineyard said, ‘What shall I do? I will send my beloved son. Probably they will respect him when they see him.’ 14 But when the vinedressers saw him, they reasoned among themselves, saying, ‘This is the heir. Come, let us kill him, that the inheritance may be ours.’ 15 So they cast him out of the vineyard and killed him. Therefore what will the owner of the vineyard do to them? 16 He will come and destroy those vinedressers and give the vineyard to others.”

And when they heard it they said, “Certainly not!”

17 Then He looked at them and said, “What then is this that is written:

‘The stone which the builders rejected
Has become the chief cornerstone’?

18 Whoever falls on that stone will be broken; but on whomever it falls, it will grind him to powder.”

Being born with an inclination does not make that inclination righteous. What is natural to fallen humanity is not automatically approved by God. In Psalm 51:5, David speaks after being confronted over his adultery with Bathsheba and his role in the murder of her husband, Uriah. He is not excusing himself or claiming he was born committing those specific acts. He is acknowledging something deeper: sin marked the human condition from the very beginning of his life. We enter the world fallen, and that fallen nature expresses itself in different ways in different people. The gospel does not say, “Celebrate every inclination.” It says, “Repent, believe, and be transformed.”
