When Criticism Confirms the Title

“Nice pictures,” one person wrote on Facebook.

“‘The Power of Love’ really made me feel like I was there,” another commented during our telephone conversation.

“‘Gifted Giving’ dragged me along, but it wasn’t anything exciting; and if I saw the book in Barnes & Noble, I wouldn’t be drawn to it based on the cover. I mostly see storm clouds, and I’m not sure what the title Modulating Tones means.”

One cousin acknowledged she purchased the book but didn’t fully understand all of it and would have to go back through it again.

“The Wordsmith & Literary Artist was over the top,” another relative conveyed. “Too much personal reflection. It almost felt like a college paper.” (Ironically, I was in college when I wrote it.)

Some people connected emotionally. Some were confused, and some expected something more commercial. There were those who appreciated certain sections, while others simply didn’t “get it.”

And honestly… that feedback fascinated me. I appeciate all of it.

Even the cover became part of that diversity. I took that picture of the clouds on a sunny day because I was amazed by them. I personally saw what looked like the face of God in the clouds. But another person saw storm clouds. Two others saw entirely different images — one saw a woman, while another saw two people.

Ironically, that diversity reinforces the title: Modulating Tones.

My goal in compiling Modulating Tones was to share different muses that might touch a heart needing love, hope, encouragement, healing, or a reminder that accepting Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior is only the beginning of the Christian walk.

Not every page will resonate with every reader, and I knew it would not.

But perhaps somewhere in the book, someone will hear a tone meant just for them — and if that happens, then the journey of writing it was worth it to me.
